Agri-PV

Agri-PV (also known as agrophotovoltaics, agrivoltaics, agrisolar, solar sharing or dual-use solar) is the simultaneous use of land for both farming and solar power (PV) electricity production. Consequently, the PV modules are arranged in a way that allows for access to the farmland with agricultural machinery.

A key question for farmers and planners of Agri-PV systems is: How are agricultural yields affected by Agri-PV?

With numerous different Agri-PV designs and agricultural growing conditions, there is no simple answer to this question. Instead, the issue is often addressed by in-depth field studies at sample test-sites (which can be costly and time-consuming).

VISTA offers a new approach in agricultural yield predictions for Agri-PV which is capable of determining impacts in advance without requiring extensive field campaigns.

Simulation-based crop yield prediction for Agri-PV and quantification of crop yield change in comparison to a reference simulation (validated with satellite data)

The use of the PROMET crop growth model allows for high-resolution yield prediction for numerous different crop types and growing conditions. In combination with the Vista Agri-PV shading addon, the model is capable of quantifying the effects of Agri-PV shading on crop yields. Simulations are conducted with meteorological data of the selected sites for multiple years to account for inter-annual variability and to ensure statistically robustness.
